IICEC HONORARY CHAIRMAN DR. FATIH BIROL RECEIVES AN HONORARY DOCTORATE


Speaking at the ceremony held in the magnificent and historical Royal Albert Hall in London, Birol said that Imperial College was a leading institution in a wide range of subjects from medicine to energy, economics and natural sciences.

Birol continued, "Imperial College recognizes one person every year with an honorary doctorate, and I was chosen this year. This is a great pride and happiness for me, my family and my country.”

Birol was honored for his “contribution towards the economic analysis of global energy issues and the championing the cause of universal energy access over the last decade,” making the lives of the energy users of the world easier by enabling them to forecast issues with accuracy.

Sir Brian Hoskins, Director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London, said “We award this year’s honorary doctorate to a most influential person in the global energy scene.” Birol’s title conferred by the College’s President and Rector, Sir Keith O’Nions.

Born in Ankara, Fatih Birol, 55, has been with the International Energy Agency since 1995. Fatih Birol was named among the “most powerful people on the global energy scene” by Forbes. Dr. Birol is also the Honorary Chairman of the Sabancı University Istanbul International Center for Energy and Climate.
