Research Activities:

Professor Carmine Difiglio is a Network Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences of Sabancı University. As the Director of the Sabancı University Istanbul Institute for Energy and Climate, 2017-2020, Professor Difiglio oversaw the development of engineering, economic and policy studies to promote sustainable global and Turkish energy solutions concluding with the publication of IICEC’s Turkey Energy Outlook.

Difiglio also serves as a Distinguished Associate for the Energy Futures Initiative, founded in 2017 by former U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest J. Moniz. Previously, Professor Difiglio served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy Analysis at the U.S. Department of Energy where he was a key advisor to three Secretaries of Energy. Before then, Difiglio was Head of Technology Policy at the International Energy Agency (IEA). At the IEA, he established the Energy Technology Perspectives model and project that continues to this day as a flagship IEA publication showing what technologies and investments are needed to meet G20 and Paris climate goals. Professor Difiglio also serves as Co- Chair of the World Federation of Scientists’ Permanent Monitoring Panel on Energy.

Difiglio’s publications span a variety of topics including technology modeling, energy security, the international oil market, fuel efficiency, alternative energy, modeling urban travel demand and estimating the efficacy of a variety of clean energy policies. Early In his career, Difiglio developed the first “engineering-economic” model to evaluate energy policies for the transportation sector. This modeling system was widely replicated for other energy sectors. Difiglio received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
